Ledger Live, the companion app for Ledger hardware wallets

Ledger Live is the free desktop and mobile application that Ledger builds for its own hardware wallets. It shows your balances, assembles transactions, installs network apps and firmware onto the device, and opens the door to staking, swapping and third-party dapps from a single window. What Ledger Live never does is hold your private keys. Those stay inside the hardware wallet, and every outgoing transaction has to be read and approved on the device's own screen before the app can broadcast it.

What Ledger Live is

Ledger Live launched in 2018 as a single application to replace the collection of browser-based tools that came before it, where each blockchain had its own separate app and a separate manager handled the device. Consolidating all of that into one program was the point: one place to see every account, one place to update the hardware, one place to send and receive. The desktop build came first, with the mobile version following a year later.

Open it and you land on the Portfolio, a combined value chart and list of your accounts. From there the app splits into a few areas. Accounts holds one entry per address set, per network. Discover lists third-party services and dapps that can be reached through the wallet. My Ledger is the maintenance bay, where the network apps and firmware that live on the device are installed and updated. Depending on your region and platform, dedicated Buy, Sell, Swap, Earn and NFT screens sit alongside them.

Ledger Live runs on Windows, macOS and Linux on the desktop, and on iOS and Android on phones and tablets. The two versions share most of their functionality, though the desktop build tends to receive advanced options first and is generally the easier place to run firmware updates or connect a wired device. Nothing forces you to pick one: the same hardware wallet can be paired with Ledger Live on several machines, because the device is the source of truth and the app is only a viewer and a courier.

It is worth being blunt about what Ledger Live is not. It is not an exchange, and it holds no customer balances. It is not a browser extension, so it does not inject a wallet into web pages the way extension wallets do. It is not a standalone software wallet either, because without a Ledger device connected you can look at your portfolio in read-only mode but you cannot move anything. And it is not the only way to use the hardware: the device works with plenty of third-party wallets, which is a useful escape hatch discussed further down.

How Ledger Live works with your device

When you first set up a hardware wallet, the device generates a random seed inside its secure chip and shows you the matching recovery phrase, normally 24 words, on its own display. That seed is the root of every private key you will ever use with it. It is created on the device, stored on the device, and, if you ever need to rebuild the wallet, restored from the words you wrote down. Ledger Live is not involved in any of that and never sees the phrase.

What the app does receive are public keys. When you add an account, the connected device exports an extended public key for the relevant derivation path, and Ledger Live uses it to derive addresses and query the network for balances and history. This is why the portfolio still loads when the hardware is unplugged: the app has enough information to watch your addresses, and nowhere near enough to spend from them.

Sending works as a handoff. You fill in the recipient, amount and fee in Ledger Live, the app builds an unsigned transaction, and the device is asked to sign it. Before it will, the hardware displays the details on its own screen and waits for a physical button press or tap. Only then does a signature come back, and only then does Ledger Live push the finished transaction out to the network. If malware had rewritten the destination address on your computer, the device screen would show the attacker's address, not yours, which is precisely why reading that screen matters more than trusting the one on your monitor.

To speak to a given blockchain, the hardware needs the matching network app installed, and installing those is one of the jobs of My Ledger inside Ledger Live. A Bitcoin app for Bitcoin, an Ethereum app that also covers EVM networks and their tokens, and so on. Device storage is finite, so on smaller models you will sometimes uninstall one network app to make room for another. Removing an app deletes nothing: the accounts and funds are on the blockchain, the keys are derived from the seed, and reinstalling brings everything straight back.

Balance and history data has to come from somewhere, and by default Ledger Live queries indexing services operated by Ledger rather than a node you control. That is convenient and it is also a privacy trade-off, since the service can see which addresses your app asks about. For Bitcoin there is a way out: Ledger Live can be pointed at your own full node so that queries stay in your household. Nothing about that changes custody, only who learns what you are looking at.

One more routine check happens quietly in the background. Each time a device connects, Ledger Live runs a genuine check, a cryptographic challenge that confirms the hardware is authentic and not a substituted or tampered unit. It is not a substitute for buying hardware from a trustworthy source, but it is a reason to be suspicious if a brand new device ever fails it.

Assets and networks

Coverage runs to thousands of coins and tokens, but the number is less useful than the structure behind it. Support comes in two layers: the base networks, each of which needs its own app on the device, and the tokens issued on top of them, which ride along with the network app. Add the Ethereum app and you can hold most ERC-20 tokens without installing anything else. The same pattern repeats on other smart contract chains.

Adding an account in Ledger Live means choosing a network, unlocking the device with the matching app open, and letting the app scan the derivation path for addresses that already have activity. It will offer to create the next empty account after those. A detail that catches people out is that a single seed produces different addresses on different derivation paths, so an account created in another wallet may not appear automatically in Ledger Live even though the same hardware and the same recovery phrase are behind it.

Some assets and networks are not natively supported. This is where the third-party route matters. Because the hardware speaks a general signing protocol, you can pair it with other wallet software for chains Ledger Live does not list, keeping the keys on the device while a different interface handles the network. It is more setup, and it puts the burden of vetting that software on you, but it means an unsupported asset is rarely a dead end.

What you can do in Ledger Live

The feature set falls into two groups. Some things Ledger Live does itself, using only the device and public blockchain data. Others are doorways to outside companies, presented inside the app but operated by someone else. Knowing which is which tells you where your money and your data actually go.

Portfolio and accounts

The Portfolio aggregates every account into one balance in your chosen fiat currency, with a chart over a selectable period and a breakdown by asset. Individual account pages carry their own balance, address list and full operation history, and each transaction links out to a block explorer if you want independent confirmation. Ledger Live can also export operation history as a CSV file, which is the usual starting point for bookkeeping or tax software. Prices shown are indicative market data, not quotes you can trade against.

Receiving and sending

Receiving is a two-screen ritual. Ledger Live shows a deposit address, and the device shows the same address independently so you can confirm the app has not been tampered with before you hand it to a counterparty. Skipping that verification is the single most common way people receive to an address they do not control.

Sending gives you the fee controls the network in question supports, from simple slow, medium and fast presets to custom fee rates on Bitcoin and manual gas settings on Ethereum. Ledger Live also keeps an address book of your own labels, and on account-based chains it will warn you about the usual traps, such as sending a token to a contract address or leaving too little native currency behind to pay for the next fee.

Buying, selling and swapping

The Buy, Sell and Swap screens are storefronts for regulated partners and exchange aggregators rather than services Ledger runs. You pick a provider, the provider handles payment, identity verification and settlement, and the assets are delivered straight to an address on your device. Ledger Live shows the quote and passes you through; the contract is with the provider.

Two consequences follow. First, availability depends on where you live, because each partner has its own licensed markets and payment rails. Second, the cost is not just the visible fee: card purchases and instant swaps carry a spread, and the total you pay is often several percent above a spot exchange price. For large amounts, comparing the in-app quote with an outside venue before confirming is simply good hygiene.

Staking and earning

For several proof-of-stake networks, Ledger Live lets you delegate or stake directly from an account, with the delegation transaction signed on the device like any other. Ethereum, Solana, Cosmos, Polkadot, Tezos and Cardano are among the assets that have had staking support in the app. Rewards accrue on-chain, and the keys never leave your hardware.

Staking is not free money, and Ledger Live is upfront that the risks belong to the network and the validator, not the app. Depending on the chain you may face lock-up and unbonding periods during which funds cannot be moved, validator commission taken from rewards, penalties if a validator misbehaves, and, where staking runs through a smart contract or a liquid staking provider, the extra risk of that contract. Read the terms on the specific asset before delegating.

NFTs

Collectibles held by supported accounts show up in a gallery view with their images and metadata, and can be sent from Ledger Live like any other asset. Treat display as a convenience rather than a guarantee: media is fetched from external sources, and an NFT that appears in your account unannounced is very often bait meant to lure you into connecting to a malicious site.

Discover, dapps and WalletConnect

The Discover section lists third-party applications that can be used with the device, and WalletConnect support lets Ledger Live act as the signing wallet for a decentralized application running in a browser elsewhere. The device still approves every signature, which is real protection, but only if you read what it displays. Approving a token allowance is not the same as sending a token, and it is worth understanding the difference before your first contract interaction.

My Ledger and firmware

My Ledger is where the hardware itself is managed from Ledger Live: installing and removing network apps, checking free storage, renaming the device, and applying firmware updates. Firmware updates are signed by Ledger and verified by the device before installation. Run them from a stable connection, do not disconnect midway, and have your recovery phrase to hand as a precaution, exactly as you would before any low-level update.

Syncing between devices

Because account lists are stored locally, setting up Ledger Live on a second machine used to mean adding every account again by hand. A sync feature now carries the list of accounts and their names between instances of Ledger Live using end-to-end encryption, so a phone and a laptop can show the same layout. What travels is metadata about which public accounts to watch. Keys are not part of it and never leave the hardware.

The security model, and its edges

The assumption baked into the design is that your computer or phone may already be compromised. Ledger Live therefore holds nothing worth stealing on its own: no keys, no seed, no ability to sign. An attacker with full control of the machine can watch your balances, annoy you, and try to trick you, but cannot produce a valid signature without the physical device and the person holding it. Background on the general category of cryptocurrency wallets is a reasonable place to start if the distinction between hot and cold storage is new to you.

The limit of that protection is what you approve. Malware that swaps a copied address, or a website that asks for an unlimited token allowance, does not need to break Ledger Live at all; it only needs you to press confirm without reading. Clear signing, where the device renders a contract call in human-readable terms rather than as a blob of hex, exists to narrow that gap, and the sensible habit is to avoid blind signing whenever a readable alternative is available.

The recovery phrase is the one absolute. It is written once, on paper or metal, kept offline, and never typed into a computer, a phone, a photograph, a password manager or a support chat. There is no legitimate situation in which Ledger Live, a firmware update, a giveaway, an airdrop claim or a support agent needs those words. Every screen that asks for them is an attack, without exception.

That warning is not abstract. In 2020, an e-commerce and marketing database belonging to Ledger was exposed, leaking customer email addresses and, for a subset of buyers, physical contact details. No keys and no funds were affected, and Ledger Live itself was not breached, but the leak fed years of targeted phishing: convincing emails, fake apps, letters, even counterfeit devices posted to real customers. Anyone who bought hardware in that era should assume their address is on a list somewhere and treat unsolicited contact accordingly. The company's public record covers the incident in more detail.

Practical consequences for daily use of Ledger Live: download the app only from the official website or the official mobile app stores, and check what you are installing rather than following a search advertisement or a link in a message. Ignore anything that arrives with urgency attached. Set a PIN on the device, and remember that the PIN protects the hardware while the recovery phrase protects everything.

Two optional features deserve a note. A passphrase, sometimes called the twenty-fifth word, creates an entirely separate set of accounts on the same seed; it is powerful, and forgetting it means those funds are gone for good. Separately, Ledger offers an opt-in, subscription-based recovery service that backs up an encrypted split of the seed with identity verification. It is off by default, it is not required to use Ledger Live, and whether it belongs in your setup depends on how you weigh convenience against involving third parties in your backup.

Finally, a point of durability. Ledger Live is convenient, not load-bearing. The seed follows the widely implemented BIP-39 standard, so if the app were discontinued tomorrow your recovery phrase would still restore the same accounts in other compatible wallets. Verifying that you can actually do this, ideally before you need to, is the best test of whether your backup is real.

What it costs

The app is free. There is no licence, no subscription and no account fee for Ledger Live, on any platform, and no charge for the core functions of viewing accounts, receiving, sending, installing network apps or updating firmware. The purchase price of the hardware wallet is the one mandatory cost, paid once.

Network fees are separate and unavoidable, because they go to the blockchain rather than to anyone in the app. Ledger Live estimates them and lets you adjust where the network allows it, but the amount is set by congestion at the moment you send. Fees vary enormously between chains, and a small transfer on a busy network can cost more than it is worth, which is worth checking before you move dust around.

Third-party services carry their own charges, and this is where the real money is. Buying with a card, selling to a bank account or swapping between assets involves the provider's fee plus a spread, and Ledger Live may also earn a share of that. Staking has validator commission, deducted from rewards. None of this is hidden, but it does mean the honest answer to what Ledger Live costs is that the software is free while the services reached through it are not.

Ledger Live compared with the alternatives

The useful comparison is not between wallet brands but between three ways of holding crypto: the hardware wallet driven by Ledger Live, the same hardware driven by third-party software, and an account at an exchange or a phone-only hot wallet. Each moves the risk somewhere different.

Read across the rows and the pattern is clear enough. Ledger Live and a third-party wallet share an identical security foundation, and the choice between them is about convenience and coverage rather than safety, with Ledger Live generally simpler and third-party software generally more capable in a specific niche. The exchange column is different in kind: it removes the responsibility of backups and replaces it with counterparty risk. Many people reasonably run both, keeping trading balances on a platform and long-term holdings behind a device.

Devices and platforms

Desktop builds cover 64-bit Windows, macOS and Linux, the last distributed as an AppImage; Linux users generally also need the udev rules that let the system talk to the device over USB. On mobile, Ledger Live is published for iOS and Android, and how the hardware connects depends on the model you own.

Bluetooth pairing carries no key material; the sensitive part of any exchange is still confirmed on the device, so a wireless connection to Ledger Live is not a weaker one in the way people sometimes assume. Storage differs by model, which mostly shows up as how many network apps you can keep installed at once. Older discontinued models may work for basic operations but can be tight on space and slow to update.

How Ledger Live has changed

The app has grown from a device manager into something closer to a wallet dashboard, and the direction of travel explains a lot about how it looks today.

Two threads run through all of it: making the app less of a chore for newcomers, and making what the device displays more meaningful as transactions grow more complicated. Both matter, and the second is arguably the more important, because a signature you cannot read is a signature you cannot check.

Getting started, step by step

A first setup with Ledger Live takes maybe twenty minutes if you do not rush the part that deserves care. Do it somewhere private, with the packaging in front of you and no one watching over your shoulder.

    Install the app from an official source

    Get Ledger Live from the official website or the official mobile app store listing, typed in by hand rather than reached through an advertisement or a link someone sent you. Fake builds are the most common way people lose funds before they have even started.

  2. STEP 02

    Set up the device itself

    Connect the hardware and follow the guided flow. Choose a PIN, let the device generate a new seed, and write the recovery phrase on the supplied cards in order. Never accept a phrase that came pre-printed with the device, and never enter one that a website or app offers you.

  3. STEP 03

    Let the app verify and update

    Ledger Live runs its genuine check, then offers any pending firmware update. Apply it before you move funds, on a connection you can leave undisturbed.

  4. STEP 04

    Install network apps and add accounts

    In My Ledger, install the apps for the chains you use. Then add the matching accounts in Ledger Live so the app knows what to watch.

    Test with a small amount first

    Send a token amount in, confirm it arrives, then send a little back out so you have practised the full round trip. Only once that works should you move a balance you would miss.

One habit is worth adopting immediately: store the recovery phrase somewhere separate from the device, ideally in two protected locations, and consider stamping it into metal if the amount justifies it. Ledger Live can be reinstalled on any machine in minutes; the words cannot be recreated at all.

Common problems

The device is not detected

Nine times out of ten it is the cable: many are charge-only and carry no data. Try a different cable and a port directly on the machine rather than through a hub. Close any other wallet software or browser tab holding the connection, since only one application can talk to the device at a time. On Linux, the udev rules usually need installing before Ledger Live can see anything at all.

A balance shows as zero after restoring

If you restored a seed and the funds are missing, the coins are almost certainly fine and the app is simply looking at a different derivation path, or you have restored under a passphrase that differs from the one used originally. Check the address in a block explorer before panicking, and remember that an empty account in Ledger Live proves nothing about the blockchain.

Sync is stuck or history looks wrong

Because balances come from an indexing service, a stall is usually on that side rather than yours. Clearing the local cache in the settings forces Ledger Live to rebuild its view from the network, and it is safe: the cache holds only public data.

A token is not listed

Tokens on a supported network normally appear once the network app is installed and the account is added. If one does not show, it may be too new, or on a chain Ledger Live does not yet cover, in which case pairing the device with third-party wallet software for that chain is the usual answer.

A transaction is stuck as pending

A transaction underpriced for current network conditions can sit unconfirmed for a long time. Some chains allow a replacement at a higher fee, and Ledger Live exposes that where it is supported. Otherwise the options are to wait for congestion to fall or, on chains that permit it, to have the transaction eventually dropped from the mempool.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ledger Live free to use?

Yes. Ledger Live is free to download and use on desktop and mobile, with no subscription for its core wallet functions. You pay for the hardware wallet, for blockchain network fees when you transact, and for any optional third-party service you choose to use inside the app.

Do I need a Ledger device to use the app?

To hold or move funds, yes. Ledger Live is built around a hardware wallet and cannot sign anything on its own. You can install it and look around without a device, but accounts can only be added and transactions only approved with the hardware connected and unlocked.

Does Ledger Live store my recovery phrase?

No. The recovery phrase is generated and shown by the device, and Ledger Live never receives it, never stores it and never has a legitimate reason to ask for it. Any app, email, chat or site that requests those 24 words is trying to steal from you.

Can I use my device with other wallets at the same time?

Yes. The same hardware works with many third-party wallets, and using one does not disable Ledger Live or move your funds anywhere. The practical constraint is that only one application can hold the USB connection at once, so close the other before connecting.

What happens to my crypto if the app is discontinued?

Nothing happens to your crypto. Coins live on their blockchains and access derives from your seed, which follows an open standard. If Ledger Live were gone tomorrow, your recovery phrase would still restore the same accounts in other compatible wallet software.

Am I safe if my computer has malware?

Largely, with one condition. Malware cannot extract keys through Ledger Live, but it can alter what appears on your screen and hope you confirm without checking. That is why the amount and destination shown on the device must be verified every time, and why you should reject anything that does not match.

Can I run everything from my phone?

If your device supports Bluetooth, yes, Ledger Live on mobile handles setup, accounts, sending and firmware updates. With a wired-only model, an Android phone can connect by cable while iOS cannot, so a desktop install is required. Many people use both and keep them in step with account syncing.

Can I export my transaction history?

Yes. Ledger Live can export account operations to a CSV file, which most portfolio trackers and tax tools will accept. Check the output against a block explorer for anything unusual, particularly swaps and staking rewards, since classification rules differ by jurisdiction.
